The piston is the smallest part of a syringe dispensing setup, and one of the most overlooked. It sits between the air pressure from your dispenser and your fluid, and it controls everything that happens after you press the foot pedal. If it is the wrong style for your fluid, you will see drips, “bouncing,” air in your deposits, and material left on the barrel wall, no matter how good your dispenser is.
The good news: fixing it is usually a matter of choosing a different piston, not buying new equipment.
What a Piston Actually Does
A piston goes into the syringe barrel after it has been filled. As the dispenser applies air pressure, the piston pushes fluid down evenly and wipes the barrel walls clean as it travels. A well-matched piston does three jobs at once:
- Keeps deposits consistent by transferring air pressure to the fluid evenly.
- Prevents dripping and oozing of thick, non-leveling fluids, and back-flow of watery fluids into the dispenser.
- Reduces waste by wiping the barrel wall clean, so less fluid is left behind when the barrel is “empty.”
It also keeps fumes from being drawn back into the dispenser and into the workspace. Nordson EFD Optimum® pistons are molded from polyethylene and designed to fit ZeroDraft™ barrels to a close tolerance, which is why the barrel and piston should be chosen together.
The Six Optimum Piston Styles
| Piston | Best for | Shop (10cc) |
|---|---|---|
| White SmoothFlow™ | Most fluids. The standard, and the right place to start. | White wiper |
| Beige SmoothFlow™ | Air-entrapped fluids. A looser fit. | Beige wiper |
| Red SmoothFlow™ | Mechanical (manual) dispensers. A tight fit. | Red wiper |
| Orange Flat-walled | Stringy, air-entrapped fluids. A looser fit that reduces “bouncing.” | Orange flat |
| Blue LV Barrier™ | Cyanoacrylates and very low viscosity fluids. | Blue barrier |
| Clear Flex | Viscous fluids that bounce. Flexible, while keeping good wall-wiping. | Clear flex |
Every style also comes in 3cc, 5cc, and 30/55cc sizes. You can see the full range in our pistons category.
Matching the Piston to the Problem
Here is how we usually troubleshoot with customers:
- Starting a new application? Use the white SmoothFlow piston. Most thick and medium-viscosity materials work well with it.
- Piston bouncing with stringy sealants? Switch to the orange flat-walled piston.
- Bouncing with thicker material? Try the clear flex piston.
- Dispensing cyanoacrylates or watery fluids? Use the blue LV Barrier piston. Fill a clear barrel about half full and insert the piston just below the top of the barrel. Don’t press it down against the fluid. That helps control very thin fluids and prevents drips.
- Using a manual, mechanical dispenser? The tight-fitting red piston is designed for it.
Many customers are using the wrong piston and don’t know it, because the symptoms look like a dispenser problem or an operator problem. A quick piston swap is often the cheapest process improvement on the bench.
Buying Barrels and Pistons Together
If the white piston is right for your fluid, the simplest way to buy is a barrel & piston set, with equal numbers of barrels and pistons packed together. For example, the 3cc clear set or the 10cc amber set for UV-sensitive materials. If you need a specialty piston, order the barrels and pistons separately.
Part of a System, Not a Standalone Part
The piston is engineered to work with the barrel wall and the tip at the other end. For the rest of the setup, read why the syringe barrel matters and how to choose a dispense tip.
Tell Us Your Fluid
Not sure which piston you should be using? Tell us what you are dispensing and we’ll tell you which piston to try. It is usually a five-minute conversation. As Nordson EFD Solutions Experts, we stock all six styles locally in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Shop pistons online or email technicalservices@jacrawfordco.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is piston bounce?
Air trapped between the piston and the fluid. Air compresses, so the piston rebounds after each shot, causing oozing and inconsistent deposits. See fluid dispenser troubleshooting.
Which piston should I use for cyanoacrylate?
The blue LV Barrier piston. It has a tight fit and a small vent hole, and it sits above the fluid so the CA can’t bond it to the barrel wall.
Can I use other brands’ pistons in Nordson EFD barrels?
Nordson EFD doesn’t recommend it. There is no industry standard for barrel and piston diameters, so parts from different makers may not fit consistently along the full barrel.
