Dialing In UV-Cure Adhesive Dispensing for Catheter Assembly

Last updated: October 28, 2026

Catheter assembly lives and dies on the adhesive bond. A UV-cure adhesive that flows beautifully on the bench can still produce rejects on the line if the deposit volume drifts from part to part. The equipment dispensing that adhesive — not just the adhesive itself — is usually where the consistency comes from. Here’s how we help medical manufacturers across Southern California, Arizona, and Baja Mexico dial in repeatable UV-cure dispensing.

Why UV-cure adhesives are unforgiving

Light-cure adhesives are popular in medical assembly because they cure on demand, bond dissimilar substrates, and leave no solvent behind. But they’re sensitive to two things that a manual process struggles to control: deposit volume and placement. Too little adhesive and the bond fails validation; too much and you get squeeze-out into the catheter lumen or onto a sealing surface. Because the adhesive only cures when you want it to, any inconsistency upstream gets locked in at the cure station.

Start with the dispenser, not the syringe

Hand-squeezing a syringe introduces operator-to-operator variation that no amount of training fully removes. A precision benchtop dispenser replaces that variation with a timed, pressure-regulated shot. For UV-cure work we typically recommend a programmable unit with closed-loop control, which holds deposit size steady even as fluid level and viscosity change over a shift. The result is the same deposit at the start of the barrel and at the end of it.

Match the tip to the geometry

The dispense tip is where precision actually happens. For the fine bondlines common in catheter and balloon assembly, a small-gauge precision tip places adhesive exactly where it belongs without wicking. Our guide to choosing a dispense tip covers gauge and style in more detail. Amber UV-block barrels protect the adhesive from premature curing in ambient light — a small detail that prevents clogged tips and scrapped material.

Control the variables that cause rejects

  • Air pressure and time: lock them down and document them as part of your process record.
  • Fluid temperature: viscosity shifts with temperature, and viscosity shifts deposit size.
  • Tip standoff: consistent distance from the substrate keeps the deposit shape repeatable.
  • Light-protected handling: amber barrels and covered tips prevent skinning.

When to automate

If you’re placing the same deposit hundreds of times a day, a 3-axis dispensing robot takes operator placement out of the equation entirely and gives you the traceability medical auditors expect. Many teams start with a benchtop dispenser to prove out the process, then scale to automation once the deposit is dialed in.

Test before you commit

Every fluid and substrate behaves a little differently. We run your actual adhesive in our Santa Fe Springs lab and recommend the dispenser, tip, and settings that hold tolerance — before you buy anything. If you’re spec’ing or troubleshooting a UV-cure process, talk to one of our specialists and we’ll help you get it repeatable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What syringe barrel should I use for UV-cure adhesive?

Use an amber Optimum syringe barrel. It blocks UV and visible light up to 550 nm while still showing the fill level. Pair it with a standard SmoothFlow tapered tip, which contains a UV-blocking additive. See dispensing by fluid type.

Which Nordson EFD dispenser is best for UV-cure adhesive?

Any Ultimus or UltimusPlus gives a timed, pressure-regulated shot. The Ultimus V can step its settings when a UV adhesive thins as the room warms, and the UltimusPlus logs every shot for medical traceability. Compare them in Ultimus vs Performus vs UltimusPlus.

Why do my UV adhesive tips keep clogging?

Light reaching the adhesive in the barrel or the translucent tip hub cures it early. Use amber barrels and UV-blocking tapered tips, or fit a tip shield over a stainless tip’s hub.
